Globe staff to hold strike vote
Thu, 06/18/2009 - 15:18The current employment contract of workers at the Globe and Mail is due to expire June 30, and as that deadline approaches, negotiations have been taking place between the company and the union which represents its editorial, advertising, and circulation employees. According to a union official for the paper, employees will vote whether to approve or reject a strike mandate on Saturday.
US newspaper biz expected to lose $25 billion by 2013
Thu, 06/18/2009 - 13:29An article by Jennifer Saba of Editor & Publisher highlights the findings of a study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) on the newspaper industry in North America. According to the research done by PWC, the industry will lose approximately $13 billion in revenue by 2013, a majority of it from print advertising. PWC has estimated print advertising alone will drop from $36.7 billion in 2008 to $24.3 billion in 2013.
Canwest execs may be included in proposed pay cuts

La Presse cutting Sunday edition

Transcontinental to lay off 250 workers, posted $144.3M loss

On Thursday this week, the company declared it will lay off 250 more employees, in addition to the 1,500 that were laid off earlier this year. Transcontinental had just reported a $144.3 million loss for the second quarter in 2009, which included restructuring charges, the reduced value of intangible assets, and a goodwill write-off totaling $169.3 million.
