Management at the Globe and Mail and the union representing 480 employees have agreed to extend talks until midnight tonight (July 2). Longtime Toronto mediator William Kaplan, who has arbitrated talks between Air Canada and its unions, has been sought to assist in the negotiations.
This past Saturday, 89 per cent of the unionized workers at the Globe voted against the proposed concessions to the newspaper’s pension plan, wages, and working hours required of employees. An email sent to union members on Monday by Local 87-M of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union told employees to prepare for a strike should they fail to reach an agreement with management. Union president Brad Honywill also noted that a web site has been set up to publish material from the reporters and columnists who would no longer be writing for the newspaper during a strike, “should that become necessary.”
